What is Fluoxetine?

How do I use Fluoxetine?

The most common use of Fluoxetine is for the treatment of depression in adults. Typically if the person is over 18 years of age then they will be started on a 20mg dose to be taken in the morning. This dose is then increased gradually for a 2 week trail period. The dose of Fluoxetine can be increased to a maximum of 80 mg/day. For elderly people the maximum dose of Fluoxetine is 20 mg/day. If a person has renal impairment or is on multiple medications then the dose of Fluoxetine needs to be lower or less frequent. If Fluoxetine is being used for the treatment of Bulimia nervosa the maximum dose in adults is 60 mg/day. For the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder the normal dose is 20 - 60 mg/day.

Fluoxetine's long-term efficiency in treating bulimia for more than 16 weeks and treating cases of obsessive compulsive disorder for more than 13 weeks has not been studied fully.

Fluoxetine and MAOI

Fluoxetine must not be used following the use of MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) for at least 14 days after the MAOI treatment was stopped. If you have been taking Fluoxetine and want to start MAOI therapy you must allow up to 5 weeks once the Fluoxetine has been discontinued.

Are there any Fluoxetine Precautions?

There are several groups of people who need to take precautions if they are planning to take Fluoxetine. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding need to avoid taking Fluoxetine. Adults are the safest users of Fluoxetine and it is not recommended for people under the age of 18 or the elderly. The medical history has to be considered and if a person has any history of seizures, allergic reactions, suicidal tendencies, unstable heart disease, renal or hepatic impairment, diabetes, hypokalemia or hyponatremia.

What are the Side Effects of Fluoxetine?

There are possible side effects from taking Fluoxetine and these include headaches, insomnia, nervousness, drowsiness or fatigue, anxiety, nausea, light headedness, dizziness, a dry mouth, diarrhoea, anorexia, tremors, and excessive sweating. There are less common side effects of Fluoxetine such as weight loss, convulsions, secual dysfunction and a rash.

How quickly will I start to feel better?
